Football fans always look forward to the end of the international break and the return of players to their clubs and we all had the same feeling as the last international break of the year came to an end but nothing prepared the football world for the shocking news that came from North London!

Tuesday evening, November 20, 2019 Tottenham made an official statement that the club had parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

Granted that Spurs have had a tough start to the season, we didn’t anticipate that the Argentine would be relieved of his duties as head coach this soon.

Pochettino who joined Spurs in 2014 from Southampton took Tottenham to their first ever Champions league final last season and have managed to finish in the top four time and time again even with the lack of signings.

As though the shock of the Argentine leaving wasn’t enough, Tottenham released a club statement the next morning stating that José Mourinho has been appointed as the club’s new head coach!

This news did come as a suprise but if Daniel Levy let go of Pochettino, it could only be to replace him with a special one and he did find that in José Mourinho.

Although Pochettino has done so well for Spurs, he never won them a trophy and that is something Mourinho is good at doing despite his pragmatic style of football.

Mourinho who has been out of a job for about eleven months since his sack from Manchester United has insisted in his press conference that he has had time to reflect and he will not make the same mistakes from his past and that he has moved on from all the club allegiances from his past.

In his first interview as head coach, José Mourinho stated, ‘ I couldn’t be happier and If I was not happy, I wouldn’t be here’.

‘It’s a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad he is going to have’

‘What can I promise? Passion, real passion.

Passion for my job but also passion for my club’.

‘That’s the way I have been all my career and I want to try obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves this club’

José Mourinho’s contract with the club stretches out to 2023.

Tottenham currently lie fourteenth on the premier league table with fourteen points from twelve matches played, managing three draws and suffering two defeats in their last five matches!

That is quite the challenge for any new manager but the Portuguese isn’t just any manager and if his previous spells have taught us anything, it is that José Mourinho is equal to the Spurs challenge.

Mourinho’s first game in charge will be away to West Ham on Saturday and nothing short of a win will be ideal for the special one.

Tottenham will also host Olympiacos come Tuesday next week for their champions’ league group match.

Fans are a little worried with the personality clash between club chairman Daniel Levy and Mourinho and Levy’s tight transfer funds but we would like to think that José Mourinho wouldn’t be there if they haven’t had discussions and agreements as to those things.

Mourinho will be working with Joao Sacramento, Carlos Lalin, Nuno Santos, Ricardo Formosinho and Giovanni Cerra as part of his coaching staff.

It is a new dawn for Tottenham and football fans as the special one returns and as sad as we are for Mauricio Pochettino, we wish him all the best at his next job!
